Sermon Outline: James 3:1-12

I. Introduction
• works and words express our faith and heart attitude

II. The Controlled Tongue (vv. 1-4)
• teachers are held with greater accountability to teach biblical truth and to live by it
• mastery over our speech reveals spiritual maturity of Christlikeness

III. The Careless Tongue (vv. 5-8)
• capable of steering the whole body towards massive corruption
• reveals hidden wickedness within the heart
• evil and corrupt speech is the devil’s venom that brings death

IV. The Conflicting Tongue (vv. 9-12)
• hypocrisy is praising God our Creator while cursing people who are His creation
• it’s impossible for good and evil to come from the same source
• authentic faith growing in Christ will consistently speak God-honoring life-giving words

V. Conclusion
• Our speech has the power for good or evil revealing the state of our heart.
• Abiding in Christ ought to reveal the Spirit’s continual fruit through our speech.

Growing Deeper with God this Week
*Journaling in Reflection*
1. How did God speak to you through this message?
2. What does your tongue reveal about your heart?
3. Have you been hurt from the damaging words of others?
(If so, may the Lord bring healing into your heart.)
4. What are the damaging resources influencing your speech (e.g., books, movies, music, etc.)? How
is this impacting your Christian walk with Jesus and with others?
5. If necessary, spend time with God confessing/repenting any corrupt/harmful speech. Ask the Lord to help you change your speech that is life-giving towards others.

In His Great Grace,
Pastor Trevor
