Following Jesus to the Cross (#3 "Like Father Like Son", John 10:22-33, 14:5-11)

Sermon Date:
Mar 24 2019
Sermon Audio:

PLEASE NOTE, the beginning of this sermon did not get recorded.

These are the thoughts/questions leading up to the section recorded:

1. If Satan wants you to worship "a Jesus", what Jesus would he tempt you to bow down and worship?
2. What you think about Jesus Christ and how you answer who Jesus is in your life is crucial as your faith and eternal life is at stake (see John 3:16, John 8:24, John 14:6, 1 Cor. 15:12-19).
3. The Enemy continues to work in ways so that you will die in your sins and face eternal remorse being forever separated from God. He does this by having you dismiss or reject Christ as Lord and Savior for the forgiveness of your sins and eternal life in heaven or at least have you recreate a false Jesus you'd like to believe in...

(now the recording of this sermon begins...)

SERMON NOTES/OUTLINE

I. MAKING JESUS INTO OUR OWN IMAGE & LIKENESS
a) various views of Jesus
b) warnings of false Christs, follow own desires (Matt. 24:4-5; 2Tim.4:3-4)

II. WHAT'S AT STAKE?
a) idolatry, eternal life, Jesus’ credibility, Christian faith and hope (Ex. 20:3-5; John 8:24, 14:6, 20:24-29, Rom. 1:4; 1 Cor. 15:12-19)

III. “JESUS, JUST TELL US!”
a) What’s Your Heart’s Motive
- religious leaders ready to stone Jesus to death (Lev. 24:16)
- secrets of the kingdom of God hidden (Luke 8:10, 10:21; John 7:17)
- God reveals for those truly seeking (Matt. 16:17, John 4:26, James 4:8)

IV. “I TOLD YOU BUT YOU DID NOT BELIEVE”
a) Jesus’ Claim to be God
Son of God sent from heaven by the Father, Son of Man (Daniel 7:13-14), forgives sin, gives eternal life, judges all humanity, accepts honor & worship, rules over creation, uses the divine name I AM (YHWH), power/authority to raise
Himself from the dead, only way to the Father, equal with God, resurrection and the life (John 3:13-16, 5:19-23; 6:48; 7:28-29; 8:12, 29, 42, 46, 58; 9:37; 10:9-11, 17-18; 11:25)

b) “H.A.N.D.S.” (Resource: Putting Jesus in His Place, Robert Bowman)
Jesus shares with God the Father Divine Honor, Divine Attributes, Divine Names, Divine Deeds, Divine Status

V. OTHER CLAIMS FOR JESUS' DEITY AS GOD-INCARNATE
Word was with God & was God, Word became flesh (John 1:1, 14), King from a Kingdom not of this world (John 18:36), Lord of the Sabbath (e.g., over the Ten Commandments, Matt. 12:8), conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matt. 1:8), exact form/nature of God to be worshipped (Luke 1:35, Phil. 2:6-11, Heb. 1:3),image of the invisible God through who all things were created (Col. 1:15-17), New Testament: “God” is often used as the divine name for the Father, “Lord” is often used as the divine name for the Son with reference to LORD/YHWH in the Old Testament (e.g. Matt. 3:3 & Is. 40:3, Rom. 10:9-13 & Joel 2:32, 1 Peter 2:3 & Psalm 34:8;1 Peter 3:13-15 & Is. 8:12-13), Jesus is called “God” (Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1, 14;John 20:28; Rom. 9:5; Col.2:9; Heb. 1:3; 2 Peter 1:1; 1Tim.3:16; Titus 2:13-14)
Jesus said, “I will be their God” (Rev. 21:7).

VI. WILL YOU FOLLOW JESUS AS YOUR LORD-GOD, SAVIOR, AND KING?
The religious leaders were picking up stones ready to kill Jesus for His claims in being God. Other disciples abandoned Jesus for His difficult teachings. Jesus knows the cross is nearing. Knowing what you know about Jesus and the tension/conflict building around Him in today’s texts, would you still be willing to follow Him to the cross (Luke 9:23)?

GROWING DEEPER IN REFLECTION
1. How did today’s message speak to you?
2. Why is it important to understand who Jesus truly is?
3. Why did Jesus come from heaven and into this world?
4. As the Son of God what makes Jesus more than just a man?
(e.g., What did He do? What were His claims?)

Growing to know Jesus more!
