SERMON: PALM SUNDAY - “Not the God You Expected?”

KEY VERSE(S): Mark 11:1-11 (ff.12-19); Zechariah 9:9
I. MAIN SERMON NOTES
- SEASON: Passover Celebration reflecting back when God saved the Hebrews in Egypt.
- Jesus rides to Jerusalem on a donkey (peace) making it publically known He is the King of the Jews (fulfills prophecy from Zech. 9:9).
- The crowd lays down palm branches declaring the path of victory.
- The crowd expects Jesus, the Messiah, to be a powerful military King who will politically/religiously free them from Roman oppression.
- Rather than attacking Rome Jesus condemns the religious leaders for their Temple practices (Mark 11:12-19).
- The crowd and the religious leaders begin to turn against Jesus.
II. APPLICATION: P.R.A.Y. (Have a Conversation with God)
P. Pause to WORSHIP God (“Heavenly Father I praise you and thank you for….”)
R. Reflect on the WORD/MESSAGE of God (“What are you teaching me?”)
Ideas: humility, cross-life, peacemaker, examine heart for Jesus
A. Ask in the WISDOM of God (“How may I apply your Word/Message in my life?”)
Y. Yield into the WAYS of God (“What next step are you asking me to take?”)
